Gems of Russian Christian Art / Russian Pilgrimage

This video presents some gems of artwork by an unknown (to the authors of the website) Russian Orthodox painter. The compilation is soothingly adorned with a song “By the Quiet River” performed by “Kalina-Folk” band.

It creates an extremely moving visual and vocal picture of Russia, as if Mother Russia is still a mystery not just to some foreigners but even to many Russian nationals. The country of this stature and size will always have some unexplored quiet corners full of rich and colorful beauty. Way of A Pilgrim team hopes to make a dream of visiting distant areas of Russia come alive as we explore the lesser-travelled routes and roads for the enjoyment and enlightenment of our guests, the pilgrims and tourists from abroad.

Please listen to the music and enjoy the song, with its rough-cut translation from Russian:

By a quiet river, in the forest of birches,
The first spring flower will blossom out.
I will make a simple wish
And, crossing myself, will look longingly to the east.

The sky will turn crimson at dawn,
The sun will eternally rise above the world,
As white dove takes to the air,
To bring God’s forgiveness from heavens above.
As white bird takes to the air,
To bring God’s forgiveness from heavens above.

My heart will discover the boundless
What no life of mine can embrace.
And for once I will feel sweetly at peace,
Just as when mom held me in her hands.
And for once I will feel sweetly at peace,
Just as when mom held me in her hands.

A sacred prayer will flow through tears,
And sadness will be overcome with Christ’s love,
Just as at this instance my soul will once sense
Its closeness with universe named the Great Rus.
